FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about KSC.

About KSC

  • Kamloops Surgical Centre is an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). ASC’s provide care and services for patients who can be sent home within several hours after their surgery, and occasionally with patients who require an overnight stay. An ASC is prohibited from keeping patients for more than one night.

  • The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. (CPSBC) is the organization that licenses all physicians in the province of British Columbia. It has a division that inspects and licenses private medical and surgery centers. Standards for patient care and safety at the Kamloops Surgical Centre meet, and typically exceed, those in the public hospitals. Kamloops Surgical Centre is Accredited with CPBSBC.

We are also audited by the Interior Health Authority each year to ensure that we meet standards of care. In addition to our external auditors we also audit our own practice and make changes and improvements as and when required.

Procedures at KSC

  • Healthy individuals over the age of 3 years, who have a stable medical condition and have not required hospital or emergency room treatment in the past 3 months are eligible for surgery or treatment at our facility.

There are strict criteria for admission to our Centre, with the emphasis being on patient safety. If you have a complicated medical history, it may be deemed safer to proceed with your surgery at the hospital but this is something that you can discuss with your surgeon as it varies from patient to patient.

  • Your surgeon and family doctor will initially determine if the clinic is the right place for your surgery. Once you are booked, your medical information is reviewed by the Kamloops Surgical Centre staff. More tests or information may be required. Once the necessary information has been gathered, the decision will be made as to whether your surgery can be performed safely at the Centre and you will be notified.

  • Overnight stays at Kamloops Surgical Centre are arranged in advance to care for patients who require a longer recovery period following surgery and more nursing care

  • Yes, it does. Please inquire beforehand for details.

  • We only perform private cosmetic surgeries at this time. We do not perform any private surgeries that are covered through the British Columbia public system (MSP). For more information about the available private plastic surgery procedures, visit our Private Cosmetic Surgery page.

  • No, we don’t. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C., our licensing body, clearly states which surgeries are permitted, and prohibits patients who have a significant medical history from receiving surgery. The goal is to minimize patient risk at all times. Two factors that influence how risk is assessed are:

    1. The health of the patient: Some medical conditions may cause problems during or after the surgery.

    2. The type of surgery and anesthesia: Some procedures stress the body more, and can have a higher rate of complications.

For more information, visit our Surgical Procedures page.

  • The type of anesthesia administered will depend upon the type of surgery that you are undergoing. It will vary from a general anesthetic to regional or local anesthetic. If you have any questions about the anesthesia just ask your surgeon during your consultation or the nursing staff who will call you the day before surgery.

Before your procedure

  • All consultations are done directly with your surgeon performing the surgery. You can either contact their office directly for a private surgery (cosmetic only) or through a referral with your family doctor. We do not provide direct consultations at the surgical centre.

  • Wait times vary depending on specialty, provider, and procedure. Once you have a referral to your surgeon, they will talk to you about wait times. The surgical centre does not provide wait times to patients, as this is managed outside of our facility.

  • Discuss this with your surgeon or family doctor. You may find the information you are looking for within this website or obtain literature from your Surgeon’s office.

Surgeons

  • Patient choice is very important, talk with your family doctor about which surgeon you would like to see. Not all surgeons have privileges at our Centre, you can review our list of surgeons and request one of them. This does not guarantee you will have surgery at the Centre. See the “How can I find out if I am eligible for surgery at KSC” question above in the Procedures at KSC FAQs section for more information.

  • This varies from surgeon to surgeon. To learn more about our team of Surgeons and Practitioners please visit our section on our surgeons.

Financing

  • Please consult with your accountant to see if your receipts are eligible for your tax return.

  • Private cosmetic surgeries are quoted after your initial consult with your surgeon. Please contact your surgeon’s office directly.

  • For information on how to finance your Surgery or treatment please go to our section on coverage & financing.
